What is a community ashram?

A community ashram is a framework of teaching, guidance and support that enables people to pursue assisted individual practice whilst remaining fully engaged in practical life and worldly responsibilities.

Living in the world

A community ashram is not dependent on a building; it is not dependent on retreat, renunciation or a protected lifestyle. YogaLiving recognises that people have social obligations but still want to progress a spiritual practice. As such the independence and individuality of people is acknowledged, as is the value of pursuing a life of productivity and engagement. Taking this approach means that the fabric of the ordinary day; family life, working life, social life and relationship, becomes and remains the content within which yoga is encountered and within which ashram life is understood and placed. This is a new ashram model for the modern age, supporting 21st century spiritual seekers to help themselves and one another, right here, right now.

Sunlight through treesTraditions of ashram life

Throughout time the aspects of ashram life have been:

  • Access to a teacher and teachings
  • Opportunity for committed practice
  • Belonging to a community
  • Opportunity to work on behalf of the ashram

Community ashram arrangements

YogaLiving has created itself as a community ashram to deliver these traditional elements in a new way. The method of doing this is achieved through:

  • A core teaching
  • A teacher providing tuition and guidance
  • Resources to assist practice
  • A fellowship of like-minded people
  • A framework of regular meetings and events
  • Retreats for concentrated practice
  • Opportunities for assisting the ashram in its aims
  • An annual gathering of ashram members
  • Regular communications
  • Productivity and service in the world through work and positive living
